How to migrate from Linux mint 16 to Linux mint 17.1 without data loss?

I actually want to install Linux mint 17.1 Cinnamon for myself, I myself have the 16th version (also Cinnamon) on board, I would like to know if it is possible to update without losing data, without deleting installed programs, without resetting the settings? If so, how?

Rewrite the turnips in the file on /etc/apt/sources.list, find what to write on the Internet.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Save important files just in case)
Just google, they should have an update tool somewhere in the rap settings, something like "Programs and updates"

@gangstarcj

I made /home a separate partition (and did not format it), and rolled a new system with the same user to a new system. Actually, all user data was saved. Then I installed only a set of programs I needed, but there were already settings for them.
