How to make your messenger?

Interested in creating a simple text messenger for mobile platforms.

IMHO, reinvent the wheel. Put a Jabber server, and on mobile phones any community that supports jabber.
However, if you want to complicate your life, you can write something of your own. The server in this case must store the history of correspondence (well, or at least not yet delivered messages). Server side web api for receiving and sending messages. The application must contact the server for new messages and when sending. But I said this in a very primitive way ...

From my own experience (and we use the VIPole messenger at work), a corporate server is set up to transfer and store data in the messenger. Then all the information that you exchange between users remains on your server, i.e. data security and corporate communication processes you control yourself anywhere without giving the data to the side. But it is clear that installing a server costs money, you have to pay for security
