How to make shadows on android 4.2?

Good evening. Tell me how to make shadows on android 4.2? Somewhere I read that it is necessary to write like this android:elevation="5dp" but when I test on my device with android 4.2 there is no shadow. Thanks in advance.

Update the support library. In older versions, shadows were not really drawn.

There is no support for elevation in API < 21 and most likely will not be. I myself faced such a problem . Is there a way to use shadows from Android L on previous versions of the API?
