How to make optional date field with empty string?

I need to have an optional date field, which would be displayed as an empty string when empty (i.e. nothing was displayed). I gave it blank = True, null = True. Made it optional. But about display does not leave in any way. Only None and that's it... default = '' can't be set - the date is the same... How to be?
