How to make Gitlab and remote docker-registry friends?

I have docker-registry on one machine and gitlab on another.
Is it possible to use a remote docker-registry?
If I change these configs:

#gitlab_rails['registry_enabled'] = true
#gitlab_rails['registry_host'] = "example.com"
#gitlab_rails['registry_port'] = "5000"
#gitlab_rails['registry_path'] = "/"

then the gitlab container cannot start. Crashes with a certificate error.
