How to make friends xib and storyboard for a universal application?

In the comments to this article , comrade iago said that the UI should be moved to xib. In the case when the application is for one type of device, or the difference is not significant, there are no problems. But what if the xib for an iPhone should be completely different than for an iPad? How to tell storyboard to take view from another xib?

1. Well, the easiest but time-consuming option is to keep two storyboards. For ipad ~ipad after the name but before the extension.
2. You can try to keep one storyboard, specify xibName.xib in the storyboard, but in fact keep two options, for ipad again xibName ~ ipad.xib, in theory for the board it should pick up the correct xib, but I have not tried it.
