How to make an OS "installer"?

There is an OS image made through dd, you need to assemble a simple installer that will set up the hard drive / array and "pour" this image onto it.
Are there any ready made solutions? Tell me which way to dig?
There are thoughts to build a live cd and sketch out a script that will do the necessary operations.

You do something similar to Stage3 (gentoo) and write the script on whatever you want. You can also look at Anaconda.
