How to make an android app on top of the lock screen?

Some players (AIMP, Google Music, etc.) are able to display a menu with controls (stop \ next, etc.) on top of the lock screen during track playback, I want to implement such functionality in my application, tell me which way to dig? A cursory googling didn't turn up anything, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong way because I don't know how to formulate the question..

There are widgets for the lock screen - lock screen widgets. A quick google turned up a couple of links, I think you can build on that. If the goal is to replace the lock screen, then you will probably need a rooted device, and a system application replacement.
