How to make alerts in Elasticsearch without X-pack Watchers?

Some time ago, I needed to set up alerts when certain logs appear in elasticsearch.
Initially, the choice fell on Watchers from X-pack, but after a while I realized that this is a paid solution.
Are there similar free solutions? Or for small checks is it easier to write your own small program that will pull the elastic via http?

You can use percolators when adding data, and if the percolator worked, then issue alerts.
