How to make a list in Autocomplete expandable?

Autocompletesupports a group of elements: https://codepen.io/anon/pen/EBNqqQ?editors=1010
How can I make nested elements hidden by default, and when clicking on a group they expand?
I'm trying to do it through List, it just supports this: https://codepen.io/anon/pen/jjyNNM
But the problem is that when you click on an element inside Autocomplete, it is selected instead of expanding the list.

There is no such possibility out of the box, but there is already a feature request in the github with the labelmaybe
