How to literally understand remote_side in SQLAlchemy relationship?

attr = relationship(..., remote_side=[id])
I understand why remote_side is needed. But how to literally understand the "remote side"? What exactly does this mean? How does this parameter determine the behavior of the relation? Please advise, thanks!
