How to limit tpl loading on server with nginx?

I have a site, on a certain engine.
I ordered an individual expensive template for this engine.
Now the layout designer tells me ".tpl files should be restricted for downloading via http, so that our template is not downloaded, because there is a bug in nginx" Is
this even possible for the site to remain working?
If yes, how to do it?

PS. The site works via https.

You have a bug in the coder, not in nginx.
Restricting access by file extension is easy - just add the appropriate location.
