How to keep the user active on the forum?

Last activity: Today 20:42
Current activity: In my account
I would like to poll the site every 30 seconds and save status changes.
I don't know which way to go.

1. Why every 30 seconds? I think the forum itself changes status no more than once every 5-10 minutes.
2. What is the actual problem? We get the page and pull out the status. 5 lines of code..
3. Put on cron and run every xx minutes
