How to invalidate a textarea?

There is an old joomla site (with old joomla) and spammers. A bright idea came to validate textaera on a link. But nothing happened. Any good ideas or solutions?

1. all spaces (or all characters except letters and numbers; including repetitions!) are replaced with a period character: "."
2. do a search: "[a-z0-9_-]+\.[a-z0-9_-]+"
3. there are matches -> to the garden!
