How to increase battery life on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS?
Hello! I recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and noticed that the battery life is much less than in Windows 8. I had this problem - when I press the "shut down" button, my laptop reboots. I found this solution on the net - write "sudo apt-get install laptop-mode-tools". Therefore, tlp does not work for me (conflicts somehow).
I had to set myself cpufreq - it helps, but not much. Please advise what can be done to increase the battery life (as detailed as possible)?

What kind of laptop, processor, what kind of graphics?
In general, a new kernel can be built, it's really not difficult, or you can connect a special repository of Ubuntu kernel developers.
I have a powerful laptop, one might say top-end. You can watch movies for 3 hours, it holds up to 3.5 hours on the Internet. I don’t know how many in Windows, but if such a device as mine lives for 3 hours, I think it’s OK.
Intel Haswell processor, in the latest 3.14/3.15 kernels there are improvements in P-State, and this directly affects both performance and runtime (positively). There will be more good changes in 3.16, but the kernel development cycle hasn't started yet.
See if something is constantly loading kernels. If something stubbornly loads - you can cut it with cpulimit(I do this for dropbox, the laptop makes less noise).
Just recently worked with the same problem. At the Asus N76-VB
What I did - I installed nvidia x server, switched to the built-in video card, the indicator immediately changed instead of 2 hours to 3.30.
Turning off the key backlight does some good, but very little.
Reduced the brightness of the screen from very bright to such that it was comfortable to watch without straining your eyes (a couple of divisions).
If the Internet is not needed (for example, when you read), then you can turn off Wi-Fi, there will also be some kind of plus.
Go to All Settings -> Power, here, in principle, it is clear what to configure.
In Brightness & Lock there is an item - Dim screen to save power - I turned it off, it really interferes with watching movies. It is much more convenient to put "Caffeine", one click is enough and the screen is not blocked.
Then there is the item "Turn screen off when inactive for" and set it up so that if it suddenly moves away from the laptop, it does not stand idle for a long time.
Go to "Startup Applications", see if something extra starts up and hangs all the time, but you don't even see it.
As an option - buy an extended battery. The laptop will be heavier, but it will last longer.

When running on battery power, reduce screen brightness, turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. if possible.

TLP is an advanced power management console tool that tries to automatically apply these settings/tweaks depending on the hardware and Linux distribution you are using.
To install TLP on Ubuntu 14.04, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw
sudo tlp start
If 2 vidyuhi then you need to install and configure bumblebee. This is Optimus for Linux.
