How to implement aligning images into tiles as Vkontakte does?

I wanted to make a similar one and I just can’t understand how VK builds tiles differently depending on the number of uploaded photos.
Do they just have different templates for all combinations of photos?
How to solve the problem with horizontal/vertical photos? Trim?
