How to handle database connection error with express-session?

The situation when at the time of starting the database server is not working. In my application (mongoose), if there is no connection to the database, it just sends a notification, but the work is not interrupted. connect-mongodoes not use mongoose and is connected separately. It is not clear how to handle the error in this case?
