How to give ubuntu internet access via wi-fi on mac os leopard?

There is an iMac on which vpn is raised to the Internet. Internet Sharing is enabled in the sharing settings, WEP encryption is set in the airport settings, and a password is set.
I have a laptop with fresh Ubuntu. The wireless network is detected, when connecting, I set the password - it tries to connect, then again it asks for the password, and so on endlessly, i.e. cannot connect. In the authorization settings I set "Shared key", instead of "Open" - without result.
Without WEP encryption (no password) lets you freely. Hint with $ tried - does not help.
What could be the problem?

Here there is one remark that WEP did not start with 128-bit, but it worked with 40-bit. Tried to do so?

Maybe it's NM? Try setting it manually via /etc/network/interfaces and stop the NM daemon or remove it altogether.
