How to get the number of incoming and outgoing messages on VKontakte?

Hello, there used to be a method in the VK API "messages.get", which returned a list and number of user or community messages. With this method and the ID of the last message, incoming and outgoing messages could be counted. Now this method is disabled, is there any other way to count incoming and outgoing messages?
