Are there any established practices for this or is it better to use patches or subprojects for plugins.

I like to update my forks with rebase. This makes the story clearer.

In Russian there is no prefix "sub". It is necessary to speak under projects and under modules. But they are not needed here. The update works fine through a merge or a rebase.
