How to fix an error when calling a function in Remix through a local node?

Connected local node to Remix Ide.
The contract deployment works, functions that change values work, but when the function is called for viewing, an error pops up:
Failed to decode output: Error: data out-of-bounds (length=0, offset=32, code=BUFFER_OVERRUN, version=abi/ 5.0.7)
How can this be fixed?
