How to find out which processor mode the OS (VMware) has set?

I have an OS that works like shit. (not really an OS, rather a program to start a PC from a flash drive without an OS and display information about it.)
They said that this could be because the processor is running in safe mode.
I seem to have found a code that translates the mode of operation.
But here's how to find out in VMware which operating mode of the processor the OS has set?
