How to find out how many users of my open-source project on github?

I did not find functionality on githhub to see how many times my repository was cloned / downloaded.
There is an idea: to make the program send an empty packet (something like snmp-trap) to my ip at the first start, and by counting such packets, I can determine the approximate number of users.
Will it be "ethical" in relation to users?
Should I warn them about this?
Are there other ways to find out the number of installers?
