How to enlarge image without changing resolution in ubuntu 11.10?
I understand that the question is interesting, but I did not find a normal adequate answer in the entire Internet.
The problem is that at high resolution: full HD 1920x1080 (dell xps L502x laptop), all icons, fonts, etc. are very small, you have to strain your eyes to see something.
Is there a utility that simply enlarges everything by one or two, while maintaining the monitor's native resolution?

The size of the controls is set inside the GTK theme.
choose an appropriate theme, or edit your own for icon size and font size.
There is a utility for the disabled ("magnifying glass"), but it's better to just set everything up correctly.
This is the first time I see such a complaint (the monitor is 23.6'' near the house, at work 2 - 22'' and 19'')…
If you have DE, then everything is generally configured centrally, with WM, of course, you will have to sweat, but ~ /.fonts.conf will solve most of the problems.
Separately, you can increase the icons like this: open Nautilus->Edit->Options->View as icons->Increase the original scale at your discretion
In theory, if you set the correct DPI, the font size will scale itself
One: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Display_Size_and_DPI
Two: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration_ (Russian)
Although the wiki is from arch, but for ubuntu also suitable
