How to edit a template in Typo3?

The point is this. There is a site and there you need to change phones, by typing they found phones in /fileadmin/templates/index.html
Well, this template appears in many places. We edit the file via FTP (we only change phones), upload it to the server. The site stops working, loading an empty body.
What can be wrong? How to change templates in TYPO3 at all?
UPD: I forgot to add a moment. If you resave in windows-1251, it works, but with bugs, and in urf-8 it doesn’t work at all, but if you return everything as it was before editing, then it works again.

Good afternoon.
The main feature of TYPO3 is a special configuration language TypoSctipt (TS), everything is configured on it.
Look in the TS template entries. It must be on the root page, then in the inclusion tab, track other templates.
By default, TYPO3 works with UTF8 encoding, and problems with it can most often be due to hosting settings.
I hope it helped, and the documentation will help you https://docs.typo3.org/typo3cms/TyposcriptReference/
