I added them to the Internet Download Manager - I've had the program hang for more than 2 hours, trying to process all the links just to start downloading ... what will happen next ..

First, don't use php for this. It is better to take an asynchronous node and run it. And then wait. It may take a long time, depending on the massiveness of the downloaded files.
