How to debug an application?

C++ / C#

There is a testing application written in c++ builder (probably version 6).
It asks for input in a field and validates it with internal calculations. How can you find out what it expects?
What debugger can be taken so that it is just enough, and you can see what happens in the code (let it be asm), after pressing the button on the form?
