How to deal with cross-browser layout, what to answer to the customer?
The situation is as follows, concluded an employment contract with the customer. I made the whole site, the only thing for payment is that it requires me to support ie8 (it is also displayed as in other browsers).
only this point is registered in the TOR for cross-browser compatibility:
5. The site must be adaptive for cross-browser layout and for use on a tablet
; this has not been discussed anywhere before. My opinion is that you need to put a stub like on YouTube for example. But he insists on cutting support for ie8 for the same money. How best to justify your answer so that the whole thing will cost a stub to update the browser?)

Since the version of browsers is not specified in the TK paragraph, you can go to the fact that ie8 is no longer suitable for the "Crossbrowser" paragraph in the classical sense of this issue. ie8 support - you can call it "Legacy browser support = +100% order value". Or Dinosaur Shit Kick, if you like.
To substantiate - using browser usage charts and the inexpediency of spending money on a dead browser, which is used by one and a half pensioners.
Starting January 12, 2016, Microsoft no longer supports older versions of Internet Explorer, including IE 8, 9, and 10.
This means that Microsoft will no longer provide security or technical support updates for those versions of its browser. You can continue to use them, but if a vulnerability is discovered in IE, the browser will remain in a broken state and the system will not be safe.
The company is urging users to upgrade to Internet Explorer 11, which offers "improved security, improved performance, better backwards compatibility," as Microsoft commented, and better support for web standards than older versions of IE.
You can also use Microsoft Edge, the company's new browser, which automatically launches Internet Explorer 11 without requiring backwards compatibility.
The reception of the argument "this was not discussed anywhere before" ("where is it written") is not very good, you do not justify yourself to the traffic police officer "on the way..is," everyone considers himself right, so he remains with his own opinion, it's better talk to him about it, that is, explain as a specialist that this is really not such a priority, and you can also say about yourself that it’s too hard to do such work for such money, it’s not your fault that it’s so hard with IE 8, always the worse the platform, the more work for the developer, so you should pay extra.
You foolishly signed something that is too hard to do.
So explain to him.
You can motivate that this is 0.0001% of the visitors to his site.
Whether he will meet you halfway - who knows.
Will you finish it on IE8 for the same amount - decide for yourself.
PS:
Perhaps the customer is simply not aware of the technical details and simply requires IE8 from you, because he thinks that you are shirking work and want money.
And, perhaps, his claims are fully supported by statistics.
Let's say I have an online store in support, where 8% falls on IE6, IE7, IE8, IE9, old Opera. They bring in 800-1500 dollars a month just for these old browsers.
Угадайте кого пошлет далеко заказчик, если не выполнить его требования? Того, кто хочет лишить его прибыли.
Мы для этих старых браузеров сделали специальную версию сайта. За полугодовую прибыль от этих 8%.
TC will have to make up for IE8. Next time will be smarter when drafting contracts and TK. I always clearly state this and indicate from which versions (or 5 versions "back" in relation to the current one from the developer - this is the case with web kits). If he convinces the customer not to adapt to the eighth donkey or to do it for some money, draw up an additional agreement.
It is clearly stated in my terms of reference and contract that the site will NOT adapt to browser versions from Microsoft below version 10. And certain things, as I have already learned from my mistakes.
