How to create a browser plugin like flashplugin?

So I was curious, how does the flash player plugin work? After all, this thing works with all browsers (except IE, there is a separate version for it) and draws an image to the desired point on the page. I just for fun wanted to implement something similar, but very simple (let's say tags with a plugin). But how is it done? Is there any information about this?

Here on this page from Mozilla it says that you need to use some kind of cross-browser NPAPI (also known as the Gecko Plugin API, but will work in both chrome and opera). There are also instructions for setting up the studio and rather cumbersome examples and a link to the documentation.
