assets - assets (google translation), used to designate the necessary files/objects that are necessary for the application to work. For example: main.css and main.js can be placed in the assets folder.
dist - ~distance~ distribution (:D), used to denote "external" files (for example, other people's plugins, modules, packages, etc.). For example: jquery.js can be put in dist.
Note: you can put files from dist into the assets folder as well. without dist, the project must exist (it's like the install folder in this case, by installing the scripts in assets, we can delete it).

asset is a contribution. The contribution you make to this site, for example. When you use ready-made solutions, it happens that customization takes place at the level of css and js files, so I would venture to suggest that this is some kind of your "contribution" to this solution. Thus, statics (css, js, sometimes images) are usually put there.
dist - from the word distribute, that is, "distribute". This usually means that some solutions are stored there that are not yet integrated into the external environment (application) intended for distribution. Installation files, for example.
