How to correctly limit the width of td?

How to correctly limit the width of td? I tried to limit using div class="table-width", but for some reason only five characters fit in the line, and the rest is transferred.
What I'm trying to achieve - when the content in the cell is less than 100px - so that the cell adjusts to the size of the content, if the content is more than 100px - so that the text wraps to a new line.
Can this be achieved? I now have a content width of 48px instead of the desired 100.
