How to connect to a third-party DB through a model?

Good afternoon. Explain how to connect to a third-party database to a table through a model, there is such an option in the documentation , but I didn’t fully understand how to connect? Explain how to do it right

The third-party base, presumably, is used by another application?
If so, then it is much more correct and prettier to make an api in the second application and work with the second base through it.
