Can people tell a newbie what to upload to the hosting in order to work with it through git?

There is already a git on the run. And yes - git clone and then git pull.

It seems that you can upload updates via FTP as a local copy.
Well, or just put the git server (client).

Check with the host. Many install Git.

If the hosting does not have Git, try FTPloy
