How to connect a GSM modem to Asterisk?
Colleagues, good day to all!
The situation is this: there is a physical server with Asterisk installed. A GSM modem (Huawei E173) is connected to this server via USB, which is used by Asterisk via the chan-dongle module. This configuration is fully debugged and works.
There was a need to connect 1 more such modem to Asterisk as a gateway. The problem is that this modem must be located in a different region.
To begin with, I prepared the modem itself, took a router with OpenWrt and a USB port, set up a VPN tunnel with the Asterisk server.
Question: what is the most competent and reliable way to implement this idea:
1. Install another 1-n Asterisk with the chan-dongle module on the router, which will then be used by the main server as a SIP-trunk;
2. Forward the USB device over the network to the server using, for example, USB over IP tunnel;
3. Other option?
I would be very grateful to hear your opinions and suggestions for implementation.

It seems to me that both options have the right to life - but I would choose the first option (except with IAX instead of SIP). Just because it's easier - and more common.
I suspect that USB over IP not on the local network will not be very responsive - and I'm not sure how chan_dongle will react to this. However, I see no difficulty in trying both options.
As for other options, I don’t think they exist (and I’m not sure that they are needed).
