How to competently create a test for the introduction of a new design on Bitrix?

There is a task to integrate a new layout on Bitrix, you need to deploy a copy of the site on a subdomain, do all the work there, and upload it back.
1C-Bitrix: Site Management 16.0.11
VPS Timeweb
Bitrix VM 5.1.7
I don't have much experience with servers, I tried to do it using standard NGIX methods, I saw the Bitrix VM code in the config, I didn't cheat.
Question: How can I easily create a subdomain with a copy of the site, and then upload it back?

Will there be changes in the database? Are new infoblocks or properties needed for a new design? Component options? If not, then simply, as Nikolai advised, create a new template, preferably a separate user group, set a condition for this group to display the new template, and work directly on the combat site.
If the changes concern not only the layout, then it is better to create a copy of the site. In the case of Bitrix Env, log in as root on the server, select manage sites in pool in the menu that appears and create a new site with your own kernel (kernel). It is convenient to copy through backup, if the space on the server allows. If you write .<your domain> in the name of the site when creating it, and in the DNS settings there is an A-record of the form *.domain.ru, then the created site will automatically work on a subdomain.

Just make a separate folder and specify a new template for it
