How to compare the value of a variable with some reference in Jmeter?

The desired scenario is the following:
1. Send a GET request to the API, get a response from the service (XML).
2. Using the XPath Extractor, parse the answer, find the required string, and write it to a variable.
3. Check this variable, whether it corresponds to the required value.
There are no problems with paragraphs 1 and 2 (the request is successfully sent, it is received and parsed), but with paragraph 3 it freezes. I just can't figure out how to check whether a variable matches some "reference" value. Tell me please! Thanks in advance!
