How to colorize icons without using iconic fonts?

Twitter Bootstrap has a set of iconic fonts that are very handy for buttons in the app, easy to change the color.
I am writing a mobile application in HTML5, I need it to work on old devices. The specificity of the application requires a lot of multi-colored icons and storing them separately is not an option.
What are some ideas?

  • Load icons as png and then give them a "color" via JS, will it work on older devices?

According to this article , @font-face is not supported everywhere, even on newer devices and not in all browsers. Thus, the use of iconic fonts is questionable.
