How to collect email open statistics?

If everything is clear with the collection of statistics on clicks, then on discoveries - not so much.
As far as I know, there used to be a way - to count the openings for requests for pictures in a letter. Now it seems that all mailers cache them, so the question arises - what is the current method for collecting statistics on opening letters?
