How to clone/migrate/image from HDD to SSD?

Hello. I have a 500 GB HDD in my laptop (it is divided into 2 parts - the first part is 450 GB with Windows, programs and data, and the second is 20 GB with some kind of recovery - a proprietary item from HP). I want to buy a 500 or 1000 GB SDD, transfer the entire system to it from the HDD (including licensed windows 8.1 64 bit for one language, all programs and data). What is the name of this procedure: clone / migrate / transfer the image? What is the best program to do this? Approximately, I understand it this way: we take a laptop with an HDD, connect an SSD to it via USB and a docking station, run the cloning program and transfer all data from the HDD to the SSD, then remove the HDD from the laptop and insert the SSD into it, start the laptop from the SSD and we use. That is, at the end of the procedure, everything starts up and everything works, including Windows, programs and data.
Am I understanding the steps correctly? And the main question: what size of SSD should I choose for successful cloning - 500 GB (the volume is the same as for HDD) or can I take 1000 GB?

When I bought ssd adata, there was an acronis, poured everything, asked a couple of times, warned me what to do and how to turn off the disk, and after a few minutes it was all over.

You can also take 1000 mb.
In general terms, the procedure is described correctly.
I would make a bootable flash drive for example from this set .
There, in the kit, all the necessary software is already there, even in several versions. You can use for example Acronis Disk Director.

ssd choose according to the wallet, and the volume does not have to be exactly equal to the old one.
if the transfer is by acronym, then it is remarkably able to adjust the size
(and as a rule, all bundled utilities are partially branded and / or truncated acronis. if not included, google is for help, the boot image is searched for elementarily, unlike the installation version, there are no serial numbers requires, it just works)
what is really worth considering is the amount of data on the old disk. if you ask such a question, then your chances of correctly transferring recovery are no longer 100%, and its value is not very great. so evaluate by the occupied space on the system partition. to this it is worth adding 20 gigs (better 30) for the procedure for updating win10 (if it is win 10) .. and then already calculate for yourself "for growth"
if the seats for two devices do not work, the old hard can be evicted to usb- box*, and it can serve as a file storage for a long time (but it’s worth evaluating its health according to SMART, again, Google will help). then all sorts of folders of long-term protection can be immediately subtracted. that's just at the time of relocation, they will need to be saved on a 3rd medium, at least temporary
ps * - it is highly desirable to provide a hard drive in a usb box with additional power. ideally with a separate power supply. with a lack of power supply via the usb port, hard in boxing can be killed quite quickly. literally

Almost any disk has an instruction that contains a link to a free version of the desired software.

Instruction.
We buy an ssd in size not less than the occupied% on hdd + 20% for free space
Pull off acronis or partition from the torrent to create a bootable flash drive
Next, boot from the flash drive and create an image from hdd or to external media (if any) or immediately clone to ssd
Change disks in places, boot from ssd
