How to check for changes in a directory or file?

I used to use cvsbackup, but it seems to me that it is morally outdated.
Is there a tool to keep track of directories or a specific file, and send a diff of changes or an updated file to a remote server? Preferably raking on the version?

SVN is there for you to store diffs, revisions and everything.
