How to change xml-files depending on the profile (configuration/environment'a)?

Hello.
There is a task - to update the configuration xml files with an automated build, depending on the environment'a.
Google says that there are the following options:
- XmlUpdate
- Xslt
- In the studio (and msbuild, respectively) it is possible to change xml configs during publish, depending on the build configuration (Release, Debug).
- there is such a solution sedodream.com/2011/12/29/UpdatingXMLFilesWithMSBui... , but it's kind of monstrous
Question - are all the possibilities listed or is there some well-known normal solution?
PS
In general, I use a self-written msbuild task, which solves the problem a little easier.
