How to change the password on the MySQL database so that the site works?

Used by CMS MODX. Procedure:

1. Changed database password
   
2. Reloaded db.
   
3. Changed the password in the config.
   
4. Cleared CMS cache.
   

The admin panel works, you can edit articles, but the site itself gives out:
"Error connecting to the database."
What could go wrong?
