How to change the mapping in elastic on a live index?

Hello everyone

1) There is an elastic index in which data is written and read.
2) One field has a mapping that needs to be changed.
3) An attempt to change the mapping through api - gives an error that the new mapping is incompatible.

Can you tell me what is the right thing to do in this case to update the mapping and save all the data?
