How to build the android.library connected to the project in debug'e?

Good afternoon,
There is a conditional project in which we have two client modules - this is the main project that we run on the phone and api is a module in the form of com.android.library. In the client module, I added two folders debug and release, and if I choose the debug option in build variants, then the sources are pulled from this folder and everything generally works as it should.
But for the dependent api module, this does not work, so that I do not select this module, it is still built from the release sources. How to make a module build in debug?
