How to broaden your horizons in programming?

How did you become a programmer? Did you choose the direction in your head: web, application, system, etc.?
I am interested in microelectronics, electrical engineering, here I was already advised to start asm.
But there is a person, he is interested in programming in principle, but he cannot decide in the direction, because. everything is interesting, but it cannot clearly structure the areas. How to broaden your horizons?

@Qubc

1) Universal programming: Delphi, C (C++, C#), Java, [Basic]
2) Algorithms, mathematics: MatLab, etc.
3) High-speed graphics, video: DirectX, DirectShow (Media Foundation) and so on.
4) Automation: PLC programming (Codesis, etc.), SCADA
5) Design: AutoCAD
6) Databases: SQL
7) web programming, networks, hacking
and then go deeper (maybe I forgot something). Naturally, listed at a minimum.
