How to be in the trend of new technologies?

New technologies, techniques and other things are constantly appearing.
1. How to follow them?
2. And most importantly, how to manage to study not only the theoretical part, but also try it in practice?
Interested, both in general and specifically in web development.
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Why chase trends?
I saw something new in JS, came home, tinkered with a beer, looked and nothing more, because it’s far from a fact that a client will ever want such a feature on his site, and spending time on mastering a “new mega ruffle” is very wasteful.
It is customary for marketers to chase trends, but in development, conservatism is not a bad thing.
There's a simple example - "Selfie stick", many bought themselves, stores stocked up with them, and the people went crazy for a month and scored. Stores now do not know where to put them. It’s the same with sites, you screw on my cool watch and in a month you have to unscrew it back - at your own expense :)

How to follow them?

Every week on Habré read the digest of digests.
In most cases, it’s enough to play around a little and understand how it works and what it might be needed for. And you can fully study as needed.

1. How to follow them?

Habr / Opennet
You read, if you are interested - on a virtual machine you installed / picked it up a little, remembered for the future: what is it And why is it.
A new task appears at work - you conduct research and pick it in more detail.

In this matter, everything depends on time and desire. One of the easiest ways is to subscribe to news feeds and podcasts of interest . Choose technologies of interest and try to apply them in your private projects, setting specific goals. It's better not to start something just to try it out. Often this does not work due to lack of motivation. It is much better to set a task, choose a suitable tool, and thus start mastering it in practice.
There are a huge number of text resources, everyone should choose the necessary and interesting ones for himself. How the starting point will fit Frontender, Habrahabr, Smashing Magazine, CSS-Tricksetc. There are also many different thematic vk publics and twitter accounts, but this is already an amateur.
It’s easier to divide podcasts into Russian-language ( Radio-T, SDCast, RadioJS, Frontflip, uWebDesign , etc.) and English-language ( The Web Platform Podcast, ShopTalk, Security Now , etc.). You can subscribe both through iTunes and through other aggregators (for example, Podcast Republic for Android). Or just add links to bookmarks.

Feedly feed the sites you want to read professional news from, subscribe to LinkedIn and Twitter for companies and groups that interest you, listen to podcasts on the road, go to professional conferences.

What's the point in chasing everything new? It is necessary to proceed from specific needs and be able to justify the choice when it comes to the need to use new technology.
