How to automate conversion of svg icons to data uri format?

I use gulp, sass. I tried to insert icons directly into the css code, but I would like to know if there are solutions to automate this process using a gallp, maybe functions for sass. So that everything is readable in the source code, and after compilation, already substituted data-uri. Please provide a proven solution.
