How to add "Minimize to Tray" button in program title?

I want to add to my program (MS VC++, WinAPI) a button to minimize to tray. The folding algorithm itself is clear - they showed the tray icon and hid the window. But how to add an icon to the window title (that bar at the top where the "Close", "Maximize" and "Minimize" buttons are located)?
Internet searches have led to indications that the method that worked in Windows XP does not work in Windows 7 and above. However, I know programs where this is implemented and works successfully both in XP and in seven/eight.
So how can you add a button to the header so that it works on both XP and newer versions of Windows?
