How to add a display driver to an ANDROID image?

Situation: I have a MediaTek X20 development board with Android 6.0 on board, I have a Chinese LCD that I want to share with it. There is no driver for this display in the system.
Q: What is the easiest way to add support for this driver? Do I need to get the driver sources (or write one myself), build the linux kernel module, and rebuild the android image? Or are there simpler solutions?

get the source of the driver (or write it yourself), build the Linux kernel module and rebuild the Android image

this is the simplest solution :)
