How to access an external database?

How to make an application that would connect to a remote database that would be somewhere on the hosting and as a result the application would receive data (For example: an image, text, etc.) There is absolutely no idea how to connect to the outside world on Android , could you dedicate?! What technologies to use? How to be?

Just like on the web: there is a backend and a frontend, communication goes through the rest api in json format. The Android application acts as a frontend, there is nothing new here.
